Self-esteem

I have been noticing lately that more and more people are exhibiting signs of low self worth. I wonder if this is as a result of the constant bombardment of highly attractive actors, models and so on. It probably doesn’t help that when standing in shopping queues there are rows and rows of magazines all about beauty and sex and body image. I don’t think that I am the only one noticing this trend. I am not very good with titles and song writers so please forgive me if I get this wrong. But, more and more songs are being written at the moment trying to boost self image across various genres. Like the one that says “you are beautiful no matter what they say…” by Christina Aguilera. Josh Groban also adds his voice to the mix. Although it is basically a love song, “You’re still you”, implies that no matter what you do, you are who you are. In “Born this way”, Lady Gaga also puts across the message that you are who you are. (aside note, just because you are who you are doesn’t excuse you from hurting others in any way). these are only a few examples, but i think they illustrate my point. I wonder if before the media was so prevalent, if as many people had the same feelings of worthlessness. Perhaps in the old days when labour was more intensive there was no time for such thoughts and people just got on with their chores. I certainly don’t believe the suicide rate was as high as it is now. And kids definitely did not take guns to school and shoot their classmates. So why do we compare ourselves to others and believe we are inferior? When you get right down to it, we all start the same way. Two cells meet and begin dividing. We are pure processes of biology. Yes some of us are rather more aesthetically pleasing and some of us are more intelligent and some of us are just born into more advantageous circumstances. But we are all equal! Whether you believe we are created/evolved, we are all inherently the same. Therefore knock that low self esteem on its head and find that one thing that defines you. Take control of it, and use it to feel better about yourself. It is only when you love yourself that you can find true happiness.
